Sun and Moon - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Sun and Moon - Honourable Cat, by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection

A simple bold coloured painting about a green and black striped cat with the Sun and the Moon in front of silver dotted orange and yellow base.  I made this painting after I read the lovely poem from Paul Gallico, titled Honourable Cat.

“I am Cat.
I am honourable.
I have pride.
I have dignity.
And I have memory.
For I am older than you.
I am older than your Gods, the Tree Gods,
The Stone Gods,
The thunder and Lightning and the Sun Gods,
And your God of Love.
I too can love,
But with only half a heart,
And that I offer you.
Accept what I am able to give,
For were I to give you all,
I could not bear your inevitable treachery.
Let us remain honourable friends.”

– by Paul Gallico from Honourable Cat.

The Cat and the Moon - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled The Cat and The Moon by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

There must be something important going on between the cats and the moon. Proved by the huge amount of artworks, poems, quotes related with this unique combination.

I made this simple, but cheerful little cat painting after I accidentally re-found the well known poem from William Butler Yeats, and I gave to it the same title, The Cat And The Moon

Patricia Dale-Green thoughts are also describing very accurately this topic: ” The cat has always been associated with the moon. Like the moon it comes to life at night, escaping from humanity and wandering over housetops with its eyes beaming out through the darkness. ”

For me, cats are one of the most sophisticated animals on Earth. They can let you close, but still they keep some distance. Like the Moon, seems close but in fact yet far away… Both remain mysterious, you never able to know them completely.

Night Shift - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Night Shift by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

All Cats are grey in the dark. Of course not only cats, but everything else is grey in the dark, so the appearances are meaningless after the light goes out. But since this proverb appeared in 1546, the cats in the dark became the symbol of this concept. When all candles be out, all cats be grey.

Night Shift - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Three cats are on their usual night shift duty, two on the red rooftop, one is lazily stretching on the branch of the tree. The moonlight creates on them a green shadow, adding colour to their grey pyjamas. The night is still, nothing moves, but they are pretty sure in their importance. Seemingly doing nothing but meanwhile controlling the Whole Universe.

Insomnia - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Insomnia - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

Rebeka, my late black cat was the model for this cat painting, which is about a cat staring out of the window to the silent night, and looking to a owl sitting on a branch of a tree.

These two creatures are both motionless, waiting for something to move, something little noise to listen, or a slight movement to react to in a split of a second. The owl is free, the black cat is inside the home looking out from behind a window, but her instincts do not make her behave differently. After the seemingly silent night, the dawn finally arrived, the first rays of the sun paint the air with warm tones, but they still not give it up. They are both excellent hunters, predators with highly developed senses of hearing and smell, and excellent eyesight adopted to night low light conditions.

Insomnia

The two animals on my painting are surrounded by decorative elements such as gold organic motifs and mosaic arrangements, creating a dreamlike, seemingly calm and peaceful scene.
