Peek A Boo Siamese Cat

Peek A Boo Siamese Cat. Watercolor painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

Recently I started to experiment with my new White Nights watercolor set, and this Siamese cat painting is one of the result, I am really pleased with. This painting in fact is not following the Style of the Cats of Karavella Collection, because for those I normally use Ecoline brilliant liquid watercolor, and has a different way of appreciating cats decorating the background with Art Deco motifs, and so on. This artwork more realistic with its lush green leaves, and I had great pleasure to create it.

Black Cat with Floral Motif of Art Nouveau - Cat Art

Black Cat with Floral Motif of Art Nouveau by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

There is one style with I fell in love at first sight, and it is called Art Nouveau. Was a very short lived, but highly creative movement, and I adore every aspect of it. The curved ornamental designs inspired by nature, the strong contours, the paintings of Mucha, the architecture, the dreamlike, otherworldly feel.  On my cat paintings, I often incorporate Art Nouveau elements, or simply get inspired by this decorative style.

Black Cat with Floral Motif of Art Nouveau by Dora Hathazi Mendes

My painting titled Black Cat of Floral Motif of Art Nouveau is one of best example for my passion to this unique style. An elegant cat painting which incorporates the black cat theme and decoration elements of Belgian Art Nouveau, also called Secession, or Jugendstil from the Turn of the Century. The Cat with the necklace is beautifully framed with ornaments of black organic lines, white mosaic, and gold flowers, in front of the warm red colour background.

Silver Tabby with Mandala - Cat Art

Silver Tabby with Mandala, cat painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

A mandala is a symbol both spiritual, and ritual in Indian religions, representing the microcosms of the universe, symbolising unity and harmony, and often used for an aid to meditation.

Silver Tabby With Mandala - Cat painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes

The smallest Feline is a masterpiece says the quote from Leonardo da Vinci. Just look into the eyes of a Cat, and listen the purring as chanting, this Divine Creature will help you experience both. See the Universe in her eyes, and probably your Cat will be your best Buddhist teacher, to show you how to meditate, how to obtain peace in your world.

On my cat painting a silver coloured, elegantly striped, sophisticated tabby cat sitting in front of blue background with a mandala, surrounded with a geometric, stained glass style yellow frame as decorative element.

Cheer Up My Friend - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cheer Up My Friend, Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

I made this rainbow inspired cat painting, before I knew that later on I will have special significance to this beautiful natural phenomena, as I didn’t know that one day I will have a rainbow child. I experienced that very heavy storm, and long pouring rain to have my sunshine, so this cheerful painting always will have a special part in my heart.

Cheer Up My Friend - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

“It takes both rain and sunshine to make a rainbow!” says the proverb, so cheer up my friend! A happy cat trying to change the mood of her grumpy cat friend, on a top of an enormous flower, in front of hand painted mosaic motif, which symbolise the rainbow.

Pretty Me In Tuxedo - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Pretty My In Tuxedo. Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

A brand new painting from the Cats of Karavella Collection paying tribute for tuxedo cats.

As I mentioned before, I have special feelings towards tuxedo cats. As a child, we had two feral cats, I can say with the most common patterns, at least in Hungary. One was a very tamed brown tabby called Mili, and the other called Miska who was an extremely wild tuxedo. We loved them both very much, but I was always wondering as a little kid, what could be his problem that he never let us not only to stroke him, but to touch him. We didn't have any contact with him, he just came for the daily milk portion, and brought us sometimes a mouse or a bird, but he was so wild, we never even could tell him thank you, most of the time he just ran away :)

Pretty Me In Tuxedo - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Pretty Me In Tuxedo, is a bright coloured mixture of a lovely cat and floral patterns, ideal present and gift idea for tuxedo cat lovers. Ecoline painting with bold colours, about a black and white cat or in other name tuxedo cat sitting front of a English Stained glass window with orchid from around 1920. Black and red background a detail from a American stencil pattern from the first years of the XX Century, and on the ground green leaves, details from an Italian Illustration from the end of the XIX. Century.

The inspiration for this cat painting came from a handsome tuxedo cat called Oliver, who has an Instagram account @olivervampirekitty. He is one of my collector, and follower at @cats_of_karavella .
He is not only a gorgeous black and white kitty, but has great affection for bags, and also for red color, that is why I choose for the background red with black motifs, to fit nicely to the tuxedo markings.

Winged Feline - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Winged Feline, Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

“If you gave wings to a cat, it would not condescend to be a bird. It would be an angel.” – from Dick Shawn.

The hybrid winged cats appear in mythology and history throughout the centuries. And for centuries they are following us. They are mystical, or even demonic?! Or exactly the opposite, they are protecting us from demons, and from other kind of bad fellows.

Winged Feline Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

On my cat painting a blue Sphynx Cat with gorgeous wings sitting in front of yellow background, surrounded by a hand painted frame.  The letter P is for Pisica, the Romanian name for Cat, as I made this painting yet back while we were living in Bucharest. But can stand for Monogram P, any name with start with this letter, or depending on us what significant meaning it has in our life.

Sun and Moon - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Sun and Moon - Honourable Cat, by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection

A simple bold coloured painting about a green and black striped cat with the Sun and the Moon in front of silver dotted orange and yellow base.  I made this painting after I read the lovely poem from Paul Gallico, titled Honourable Cat.

Cat Art titled Sun and Moon - Honourable Cat by Dora Hathazi Mendes

“I am Cat.
I am honourable.
I have pride.
I have dignity.
And I have memory.
For I am older than you.
I am older than your Gods, the Tree Gods,
The Stone Gods,
The thunder and Lightning and the Sun Gods,
And your God of Love.
I too can love,
But with only half a heart,
And that I offer you.
Accept what I am able to give,
For were I to give you all,
I could not bear your inevitable treachery.
Let us remain honourable friends.”

– by Paul Gallico from Honourable Cat.

Blue Tabby - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Blue Tabby by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection

As a child, we had two cats, one wild male, which was a black and white tuxedo called Miska, and a very affectionate female tabby cat, Mili. That was the time when I first fallen in love with cats, and from my saved money I bought the first cat book of my existing collection, which was about different cat breeds of the world.

I was very surprised to see, that certain fur colors were called blue in the book, instead of grey, so later on I painted my own version of my childhood cat, but this time made it really-really blue.

Let me introduce you the new mutation of the mackerel cat, my extremely Blue Tabby painting which is resting lazily in front of orange background with hand painted black mosaic motifs,  also an Art Deco style stained glass window, and pink silver dotted frame.

Dreaming About - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Dreaming About by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection .

“If there were to be an universal sound depicting peace, I would surely vote for the purr.” Quote by Barbara L. Diamond.

Dreaming About - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

A whimsical, orange, blue and white colored painting about a peacefully sleeping striped cat front of decorated background in the style of the Art Deco stained glass windows. The white-blue striped tabby is surrounded by painted silver mosaic, dots, and a question mark which gave  the title, what is she dreaming about?
The Dreaming About painting suggests a calm atmosphere; it is ideal decoration to room of children for instance.
