Love Is In The Air - Cat Art

A lovely and cheerful ecoline painting about a ginger cat in rainbow socks looking up to the dance of mating colourful birds.

The red cat is surrounded with motifs of Italian Art Deco illustration from the end of the XIX. Century, and sitting on green leaves, which is a decorative pattern from a XX. Century book illustration from the Netherlands. The original cat painting is the part of my Cats of Karavella Collection.

The original artwork will reveal a gorgeous surprise to its future owner, as the grey parts of the painting is made by silver paint, which will add a wonderful effect, as walking live in front of the painting, the silver parts will brightly pop out, and will give an additional movement to the artwork. Hearts and Tails - Cat Art

A thank you message with two lovely cats eating from their food bowls, in front of a giant red heart. The black and white tuxedo cat, and the white cat curling together their tails, symbolise their unity and brotherhood.

Decorated with an Art Deco Flower motif from a XIX. Century English book illustration. This painting was inspired by a photograph of one of my dear collector, a lovely image about his cats, the tuxedo Oliver and the recently adopted white cat, Mr. Hoover peacefully eating together.

My Brother From Another Mother - Cat Art

My Brother From Another Mother. Cat painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

What happen if a mouse and a cat meet? Usually nothing nice right? But in my paintings, everything is possible.

My Brother From Another Mother, a charming, whimsical white cat painting, an unlikely friendly encounter of a tattooed white cat and a mouse, appeared to be the best buddies of the World. The are decorated with little pink flowers, and green leaves, in front of a geometric pattern English Art Deco style stained glass window from around 1920. My newest addition for the Cats of Karavella Collection.

Sun and Moon - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Sun and Moon - Honourable Cat, by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection

A simple bold coloured painting about a green and black striped cat with the Sun and the Moon in front of silver dotted orange and yellow base.  I made this painting after I read the lovely poem from Paul Gallico, titled Honourable Cat.

Cat Art titled Sun and Moon - Honourable Cat by Dora Hathazi Mendes

“I am Cat.
I am honourable.
I have pride.
I have dignity.
And I have memory.
For I am older than you.
I am older than your Gods, the Tree Gods,
The Stone Gods,
The thunder and Lightning and the Sun Gods,
And your God of Love.
I too can love,
But with only half a heart,
And that I offer you.
Accept what I am able to give,
For were I to give you all,
I could not bear your inevitable treachery.
Let us remain honourable friends.”

– by Paul Gallico from Honourable Cat.

Hide and Seek - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled The Cat and The Moon by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

Kittens are mischievous little creatures, playful a little children continously experimenting the big world around them, sniffing. poking, jumping, running, they are practically unstoppable little energy bombs.

Hide and Seek - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

On my whimsical spring painting a red and a black striped little kitten are playing hide and seek in the silver dotted high grass, in front of painted green and yellow mosaic pattern. Their striped tails are like little antennas up into the air letting their camouflage not as effective as they expected.

The Cat and the Moon - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled The Cat and The Moon by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

There must be something important going on between the cats and the moon. Proved by the huge amount of artworks, poems, quotes related with this unique combination.

I made this simple, but cheerful little cat painting after I accidentally re-found the well known poem from William Butler Yeats, and I gave to it the same title, The Cat And The Moon

The Cat And The Moon - Cat painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Patricia Dale-Green thoughts are also describing very accurately this topic: ” The cat has always been associated with the moon. Like the moon it comes to life at night, escaping from humanity and wandering over housetops with its eyes beaming out through the darkness. ”

For me, cats are one of the most sophisticated animals on Earth. They can let you close, but still they keep some distance. Like the Moon, seems close but in fact yet far away… Both remain mysterious, you never able to know them completely.

Hunter in Camouflage - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Hunter in Camouflage by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

I made this whimsical cat painting while I was expecting our first child. But this time I already knew, that we were going to have a baby boy.

I always thought that cats are feminine animals, because of their grace and beauty, but that time  I wanted to create something which put an effect more on the masculine side of these gorgeous felines, and as well something which goes well with blue and fit better in the room of a boy!

So, the Hunter in Camouflage was born and took place in my boy´s room as decoration, waiting for his arrival.

Cat Art Hunter in Camouflage by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Cats are excellent hunters, born with the instinct of chasing and catching a prey. They are great opportunist as well, and they rarely miss a chance to grab an extra titbit, or catch a bird, or rodent, can be for hunger, but also only for the sake of hunting, and sheer excitement. The depictions of cat as thieves, normally displays the stealth, patience and quicksilver action which are the skills not only of a thief, but also of a hunter which perfected by long practice.

On my colorful, whimsical painting a black, striped tailed cat waiting motionless staring at three eggs, and trying to camouflage itself among long grass, in front of painted blue and yellow mosaic pattern. The feline is waiting for his big moment, for the first chick arrive to the world, without noticing the danger hidden just behind.

Cat Cocktail - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Cat Cocktail by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

Cat Cocktail is a bright, colourful painting about a mixture of cats with different colours, patterns, motifs representing the diversity of this amazing animal species.

Cat Cocktail from the Cats of Karavella Collection. Painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes

The cats are in all different patterns, such as striped, floral, dotted, checked, in front of densely decorated background in the idea of “horror vacui” which in visual art mean the fear of the empty, thus filling of the entire surface of the artwork with details. For example, bronze mosaic, organic ornaments, floral motifs, star, dots, silver and black chess filed, and a silhouette of a cat head.

Night Shift - Cat Art by Cats of Karavella

Cat Art titled Night Shift by Dora Hathazi Mendes, from the Cats of Karavella Collection.

All Cats are grey in the dark. Of course not only cats, but everything else is grey in the dark, so the appearances are meaningless after the light goes out. But since this proverb appeared in 1546, the cats in the dark became the symbol of this concept. When all candles be out, all cats be grey.

Night Shift - Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Three cats are on their usual night shift duty, two on the red rooftop, one is lazily stretching on the branch of the tree. The moonlight creates on them a green shadow, adding colour to their grey pyjamas. The night is still, nothing moves, but they are pretty sure in their importance. Seemingly doing nothing but meanwhile controlling the Whole Universe.
